Pain / Fever
(analgesics)
  1. T.L.C. (Tender Loving Care)

  2. Acetaminophen

    1. Tylenol: Check concentration of dosage in preparation and give 5-6 mg per pound. For example 0.8 ml (80 mg) of drops for 14 lb. child.

    2. Elixir - 3/4 teaspoon per 20 lb. weight every 4-6 hours.

Important: drops of Tylenol are 3 times stronger per unit than elixir. Check
and make sure you're using proper amount per drug.

  3. Ibuprofen

    1. Motrin: [susp. 1/2-3/4 tsp. per 20 lbs]

    2. Advil: [One Tab = 200 mg, per 40 lbs every 6-8 hours]

NOTE: For high fevers you can alternate between Tylenol and Ibuprofen.  Example: 1 dose of Ibuprofen and Tylenol can be taken every six hours. Therefore you can take an Ibuprofen, three hours later take Tylenol, then three hours after that take another dose of Ibuprofen, etc. This should be done for very high fevers only.

  4. Narcotics (analgesics): prescription only - often used for cough suppression.

    1. Codeine

    2. Hydrocodone (a stronger narcotic)

NOTE: Ear Aches are common causes of pain and sleep disruption in child.  It is certainly okay to calm child down and thus allow him to sleep. You can call our office and get an appt. in the morning.
