Diarrhea/ Vomiting

  1. Generally caused by:
  1. Viruses
  2. Allergies to foods
  3. Too much juice
  4. Antibiotics: often associated in viral G.I.s with vomiting
  5. Food poisoning
  1. Basic Treatment
  1. Small amounts of any foods / liquids
  2. Frequent feedings
  3. B.R.A.T.: Bananas, Rice, Applesauce & Toast.  These foods have a constipating effect when taken together.
  4. Allow stomach to rest for 1- 2 hours after a vomiting episode before refeeding. Feed with small amounts and do so frequently.
  1. Steps
  1. Initially can stop milk (1 day)
  2. Give other foods and juices
  3. Dilute milk after 24 hours
  4. Never give clear fluids for any prolonged time.
  5. Pedialyte is not superior to other clear fluids and yet is very expensive.
  1. Medicines are generally not needed!
  1. Signs of Dehydration
  1. Prolonged inactivity
  2. Eyes sink into skull
  3. No urine output (p.p.) in over 12 hours
  4. Dry mucous membranes of mouth
