Diarrhea/ Vomiting
- Generally caused by:
- Viruses
- Allergies to foods
- Too much juice
- Antibiotics: often associated in viral G.I.s with vomiting
- Food poisoning
- Basic Treatment
- Small amounts of any foods / liquids
- Frequent feedings
- B.R.A.T.: Bananas, Rice, Applesauce & Toast. These foods have a
constipating effect when taken together.
- Allow stomach to rest for 1- 2 hours after a vomiting episode before refeeding.
Feed with small amounts and do so frequently.
- Steps
- Initially can stop milk (1 day)
- Give other foods and juices
- Dilute milk after 24 hours
- Never give clear fluids for any prolonged time.
- Pedialyte is not superior to other clear fluids and yet is very expensive.
- Medicines are generally not needed!
- Signs of Dehydration
- Prolonged inactivity
- Eyes sink into skull
- No urine output (p.p.) in over 12 hours
- Dry mucous membranes of mouth
